If Disney really wanted to have a mermaid of colour, there are plenty of angles that could have been taken: a spinoff film of Gabriella, Ariel’s deaf black mermaid friend, or an original film based on women in sea-dwelling folklore. They could have chosen the Syrian goddess Atargatis, or the Japanese Ningyo. They could have brought to life Mami Wata of West Africa, or Thai princess Suvannamaccha.
