It's the way of practice. As a word is written incorrectly, a neural connection is formed for that spelling. Every repetition solidifies that connection, until it's instinctual. Replacing the pattern is possible, but takes time and focus.

A big one for me used to be 'guarantee'.

I now think of it as a French word spoken with a Montreal accent. Never misses anymore!
