The doors whirred gently to a close. Then seconds passed as the locks snapped fast, and I heard the car exit the driveway.

At last, I was alone.

I rushed back to Dr. Beron’s private study, never locked, for something within captivated me that I’d yet to understand. It was a large painting, abstract and without colour, the only decoration in the room, mounted upon the wall behind the desk.

I had to see it again.

From the entrance, the masterpiece seemed to hover in the air, beautiful, elegant, yet perplexing to behold.

Iris Beron, from what I certainly knew, was an artistic recluse and a private contractor studying the effects of diverse sensory data on the neural development of — often sick and poverty stricken — children and young adults, as delivered through a nimble blend of suggestion, psychotropic substances, and in modernistic instances, augmented reality.

They contended it was legal, and purposeful to various large organizations they weren’t free to further discuss with me at that time.
